The radiation dose, as with all of our X-Ray, CT and DEXA examinations, is kept as low as reasonably achievable. Radiation is found all around us in the atmosphere: from Radon arising from the earth, to mobile phone cellular activity and the sunshine outside. As with all medical exams and procedures, there is a risk/benefit relationship to undergoing to the examination, and the benefit to such an exam (receiving a correct diagnosis to better manage your presneting symptom) will far outweight any radiation risk. We optimise our scan times and doses to keep your radiation dose as low as possible, and you can rest easy knowing that any CT examination performed has been vetted, protocoled and optimized to ensure the correct clinical information has been obtained from your exam. Over the course of your lifetime, you will have what is known as an "accumulative dose" of environmental radiation, and very often, Radiological examinations will give a far smaller radiation dose, than the environmental doses that we receive over our lifetime.
For some of our CT examinations, we use Iodinated Contrast or Barium Sulphate based agent to better highlight your internal blood vessels and structures. Sometimes this will be given Intravenously, sometimes it will be given Orally. Generally speaking, contrast agents are safe to use and severe reactions to the use of these agents, are quite rare. Prior to your exam, however, you will be questioned about any previous or possible allergies, hives or allergic reactions to previous environmental or food based products. The types of reactions to contrast media can range from very mild, to severe - however our on site staff and supporting medical practitioners are well equipped to manage any such reactions. I you have any concerns about allergies or previous reactions, please let our staff know prior to your examination.
